Vice President, Philanthropy Programs, Global Philanthropy Forum

 

The Global Philanthropy Forum (GPF) is a project of the World Affairs Council. Its purpose is to build a community of philanthropists and social investors committed to international causes—and to inform, enable and enhance the strategic nature of their giving. It does so through systematic outreach and relationship building; hosting an Annual Conference and other networking and learning events; and providing on-line resources to donors through its website: www.philanthropyforum.org.

The Vice President is part of the senior team of the GPF, reporting to the CEO and working closely with two other VP level colleagues.  S/he has lead responsibility for design and implementation of the GPF’s signature program, its Annual Conference, as well as programs that are held throughout the year. The core constituencies for these programs are principals of family foundations from the US and abroad. However, the GPF also serves executives of private, corporate and community foundations, primarily in the US.

The Vice President supports the GPF strategic planning and fundraising efforts and supervises two Program Officers. The ideal candidate will be confident and experienced in managing teams under tight deadlines, will work effectively with senior colleagues and demonstrate the utmost discretion and sensitivity to the needs of donors. S/he will have deep exposure to and knowledge of the role the philanthropic sector can play in advancing economic development.

Overseeing the work of the Program Officers, the VP Philanthropy Programs:

Surveys the Field

  • So as to ensure that GPF programs remain at the cutting edge of change, the VP monitors developments in the practice of philanthropy and social investing, international economic development and related fields; tracks promising philanthropic initiatives and cross-sector partnerships designed to achieve social goals;
  • Identifies potential speakers and initiatives to be highlighted in GPF programs, consistent with the GPF tradition of featuring emerging leaders and well-known marquis speakers;

 

Designs and Executes the Annual Conference and other programs

  • In consultation with the CEO, develops annual conference agenda, identifies themes, topics and speakers, and coordinates speaker recruitment and partner involvement;
  • Oversees all aspects of the Annual Conference, including logistical arrangements, directing GPF Program Officers, interns and volunteers;
  • Provides content for GPF marketing and other collateral materials, coordinating video and social media related to the conference;
  • Edits an annual monograph containing speeches made at the Annual Conference;
  • Identifies opportunities for on-site and travel programs with speakers, and manages related research, speaker recruitment, audience building and logistical arrangements;

 

Develops on-line Resources on GPF website

  • Conceives and builds website resources with content partners, including members-only resources for GPF donors

 

Plans Strategically

  • Contributes to the development of the GPF’s strategic plan and business model helping to ensure that strategic planning is informed by the knowledge gained in designing programs, and that the program content is informed by the strategic plan.
  • Bearing in mind the GPF’s commitment to setting clear goals, tracking progress, assessing outcomes and evaluating the impact of the Forum, the VP will help in the design of conference/program surveys and other evaluation tools so that the GPF can continually learn and improve.

Raises Funds and Builds Membership

As part of a senior team, the VP helps design and execute both a membership strategy and a fundraising plan for the GPF, aimed at both building community and achieving long-term financial sustainability. Toward that end, s/he:

·         Identifies foundations, individual donors, government agencies, and/or corporations that are potential members or supporters of the GPF and its activities;

·         Drafts proposals seeking financial support for the GPF, helps to design and monitor budgets; and writes interim and final narrative and financial reports to the Forum’s supporters;

·         Prepares regular reports on GPF activities, offering benchmarks for progress.

 Qualifications:

  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for the mission of the GPF.
  • Experience with and knowledge of global philanthropy – familiarity with international development issues and key players. An advanced degree in economic development or equivalent a plus.
  • A minimum of ten years experience in senior management in a nonprofit organization.
  • A proven track record in program design, development and execution.
  • Documented success in drafting foundation grant proposals and reports.
  • Excellent writing, editing and other communications skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, comfort with research.
  • Discretion with donors; willingness to respect the relationship of trust that GPF has with its members.
  • Team player and collaborative with colleagues; strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong management skills, including ability to mentor staff and to instill a culture of customer relations.
  • An entrepreneurial approach, flexibility and a readiness to seize new opportunities.

The offices are located in downtown San Francisco, near Union Square, at the World Affairs Center, a building owned and operated by the Council.

Vice President, External Affairs, Global Philanthropy Forum

 

The Global Philanthropy Forum (GPF) seeks a Vice President to join its expanded senior team. Founded in 2001, the GPF works to build a learning community of philanthropists – and to inform, enable and enhance the strategic nature of their giving and social investing.  It pursues its objectives through systematic outreach and relationship building; hosting an Annual Conference and other networking and learning events; and providing on-line resources to donors through its website: www.philanthropyforum.org.

The new Vice President will be part of the senior team of the GPF, reporting to the CEO and working closely with two other VP level colleagues. S/he will direct one staff person and media consulting services if needed.  

The VP will collaborate with colleagues on GPF strategic and business planning, reaching new audiences, creating new offerings; expanding the membership base; and raising funds. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned marketing and communications professional, comfortable with data analysis, experienced in a fundraising role, and a skilled manager and mentor.  The VP will be responsible for:

Raising Visibility and Reaching New Audiences

Raising the visibility and building the brand of the GPF; establishing the GPF as a premiere content provider in philanthropy and global development spaces. S/he will:

        • Devise and execute a marketing, media and dissemination strategy, leveraging new media and new partnerships. Repurpose and broadly distribute GPF content to reach a wider audience;
        • Oversee, build and expand the use of the GPF website and its online platform for collaboration, co-funding and peer learning among GPF member donors. Develop new on-line products to reach new markets;
        • Evaluate and advance partnerships with content providers and distributors.
        • Advising on the media and marketing aspects of potential partnerships with likeminded organizations.

 

Planning Strategically, Expanding and Serving a Membership Base

  • Assisting the CEO and working with VP colleagues to devise plans adding value for existing and prospective GPF members and assuring the organization’s continued growth and financial viability;
  • Working to expand membership base with special attention to corporations seeking social outcomes and corporate foundations.

  

Devising Systems for Monitoring Progress, Assessing Outcomes, Evaluating Impact

  • Designing systems for evaluating the GPF’s impact, including various surveys and assessments, bearing in mind its immediate goal of building a network of donors and social investors, its interim goals of informing, enabling and enhancing the strategic nature of their giving, and its ultimate goal of helping them to achieve the social change they seek;

 

o   Gathering and analyzing data that supports donor services offerings;

o   Tracking the outcomes of GPF programming, including partnerships forged, grants made or initiatives undertaken by GPF participants;

o   Working with the senior management team to formulate the GPF’s long-term strategic plan, by conducting market research to understand the GPF’s niche;

o   Designing surveys and focus groups.

  • Designing and implementing a system for surveying donors within the GPF network to build accurate profiles and map out ways to match-make among donors who share philanthropic strategies and goals.

 

 Raising Funds:

  • Drafting fundraising proposals and grant reports outlining the specifics of the initiatives for which funds are sought, as well as benchmarks for measuring progress;
  • Forging partnerships with and seeking financial support from corporations and corporate foundations.

 

 

Qualifications for the job:

  • A commitment to the mission of the GPF
  • Experience with and knowledge of the corporate and philanthropic sectors
  • A minimum of ten years experience in senior roles in marketing and media relations, and in strategic planning; nonprofit experience in senior management role
  • Significant experience in drafting successful foundation grant proposals and reports
  • Knowledge of and comfort with new media
  • Experience in forging partnerships within and across sectors
  • Deep knowledge of and extensive experience with evaluation systems and techniques and data management
  • Excellent writing, editing and other communications skills
  • Team player and collaborative with colleagues; strong interpersonal skills
