Richard Lewis

Dr. Richard Lewis started his career working as a labour law advisor to the Natal Chamber of Industries in South Africa. He then lectured for several years in commercial jurisprudence at the Euro-Akademie, Germany. Since returning to South Africa, he has for 27 years been engaged in Strategic Planning, Labour Law, Leadership Development and Corporate Governance.

Lewis has served as head of Strategy and HR of the Artisan Training Institute (ATI) since 2008, also chairing their Strategic Review Committee and Remuneration Committee. ATI set a vision to be the leading, principle-driven centre of excellence for artisan and related training and to contribute substantially to the upliftment of southern Africa. ATI has become the leading privately owned artisan training centre in Southern African Development Community that offers a full range of technical training.

Lewis is non-executive director on the Board of a JSE listed company (BSI Steel) and was the non-executive chairman of Unplugged Communications, an international award winning HSE communications company. He is currently chairman of WESSA, one of the oldest and largest environmental education organisations of its kind on the continent, recognised by the United Nations as a Regional Centre of Expertise.

He has received National Awards from both the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa, and from the National Association of Conservancies and Stewardships of South Africa for his volunteer work in ‘caring for the earth.’
